Memories of Gandhi ji

Ahmedabad Then-Bapu's Hriday Kunj

Mahatma Gandhi (Gandhiji as we remember him) stayed in my hometown Ahmedabad for 15 years of his life. His Ashram (house and workplace) is a must visit place, for all visitors to Ahmedabad. Small building, inside the complex, where he used to stay is known as “Hriday Kunj” ,abode of heart. This photograph shows room where he used to spin cotton and meet people. Starkly simple, with low mattress, spinning wheel and desk ,it reflects person himself. Room is generally kept locked and one is required to see it from lattice window. I have taken this photograph through the tiny grill of the window.

  1. Mahatma Gandhi was a great man. We need men like him today. Few women and men of peace today. Gandhi is one of my hero’s. Thank you for reminding people. Don’t have to destroy a nation to have change.

  2. Good picture, Sonali, and what a great man! As you say, stark simplicity – I’ve seen a picture of him with his spinning wheel – its a classic picture, by Margaret Bourke-White, monochrome, and I like it very much.

I had no idea he lived in Ahmedabad – in fact I’d never heard of Ahmedabad until I met you! Thanks for the good picture and the information! Adrian
